Building Stoic Note hasn't been an easy journey.
At the time of writing this, we're still very much in the early stages of building the brand. There's a long way to go, plenty to learn and probably a few more mistakes to make along the way.
That's exactly why I started Making the Brand — to document the journey of building Stoic Note from the beginning, including the good parts, the mistakes and everything I learn along the way.
Why I Started Stoic Note
The idea behind Stoic Note came from something that had already made a difference in my own life: Stoicism.
I wanted to build a brand around the principles of Stoic philosophy — particularly discipline, resilience, self-control and focusing on what we can control.
When deciding on our first product, a Stoicism journal felt like the natural place to start.
Stoicism isn't something you simply read about and suddenly master. Like most forms of self-improvement, it takes practice. Journalling gives us an opportunity to slow down, reflect and become more aware of our thoughts and actions.
That's where the idea for the Stoic Note Journal began.
Creating Our First Stoicism Journal
I didn't want to create just another blank notebook.
The Stoic Note Journal combines Stoic philosophy, gratitude, self-improvement, guided reflection and lessons from historical figures.
The idea is simple: learn from people and philosophies of the past, reflect on those lessons and consider how they can be applied to your own life.
However, turning that idea into a physical product was much harder than I expected.
Four Months for 300 Journals
One of the hardest parts of building Stoic Note has been dealing with manufacturing.
Our supplier did a great job with the overall quality of the journal itself, but the process was frustrating.
Our first production run was only 300 journals, yet it took roughly four months for them to arrive.
There were constant delays, communication problems and updates that didn't always reflect what was actually happening.
Then the journals finally arrived.
After waiting four months, we discovered that around 20% of them were damaged.
Not exactly the start I'd imagined.
But building a business seems to involve solving one problem and immediately discovering another.
And strangely enough, there's a Stoic lesson in that too.
I couldn't change the four months we'd already waited. I couldn't undo the mistakes that had been made. What I could do was learn from the experience and make better decisions going forward.
Stoic Note Is Just Getting Started
Despite those setbacks, I'm happy with how far Stoic Note has come.
Something that originally existed as an idea is now a real product that people can actually hold, write in and use.
And I already have plenty of ideas about where the brand could go next.
The long-term goal has never been for Stoic Note to sell only journals. I want to build something much bigger around Stoicism, discipline and self-improvement.
But I'm also trying not to rush.
Before deciding on our next major product, I want to listen to the people who are actually using what we've created.
Customer feedback matters.
- What do people love about the journal?
- What could we improve?
- And most importantly, what would they like Stoic Note to create next?
Those answers will help shape the next chapter of the brand.
For now, we're going to keep building, learning and documenting the journey through Making the Brand.
We're still right at the beginning.
And that's what makes it exciting.
Welcome to Making the Brand.
